This protocol anomaly triggers when it detects a SYSLOG message that is too large. RFC-3164 recommends a message size of 1024 bytes. This length has been adjusted by RFC-5424, which allows for longer message sizes, making this alert somewhat obsolete.
A protocol anomaly exists when a syslog message contains more than 1024 bytes. Receiving such a message could indicate an attacker is attempting to exploit a buffer overflow vulnerability in a syslog implementation. The impact of overly long messages depends on how a syslog server handles it.
