X11: X Protocol


X Window System is a system for implementing a window-based user interface on bit-mapped displays. X11 is the most current and widely used version of X. It is actually a network protocol that was designed to allow Unix programs that utilize a GUI to send the graphical output to a remote display. X11 usually runs on TCP port 6000, 6001, 6002, etc.
