DNS: Microsoft Windows SMTP Service DNS Response Spoofing

This signature detects attempts to exploit a known spoofing vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Service. It is due to insufficient validation of DNS responses to queries made by the SMTP service. A successful attack can allow remote unauthenticated attackers to cause redirection of e-mail traffic.

Extended Description

The Microsoft Windows Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Server is prone to a DNS spoofing vulnerability. Successfully exploiting this issue allows remote attackers to spoof DNS replies, allowing them to redirect network traffic and to launch man-in-the-middle attacks.
